Alexis Mac Allister has admitted he is "very, very sad" that Liverpool have told him they are not in a position to offer him a new contract — and revealed he had genuine options to leave the club in the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old Argentina international has two years remaining on the deal he signed when he joined Liverpool in the summer of 2023. His frustration has been sharpened by watching teammates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch secure new long-term contracts at Anfield this year.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Liverpool's UEFA Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid, Mac Allister was candid about his situation: "As everyone knows, I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which makes me very, very sad."

"Everyone can see I give my 100 per cent for this football club, every single day in training, games. Of course I can have very good games, very bad games like everyone. I always give my best."

He added: "I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me a little bit sad that I didn't get mine."

Options to leave, but committed for now

Mac Allister confirmed he was close to departing in the summer, but chose to stay: "There were options to leave this summer and I think right now I'm in the right club and I have the mindset to give my 100 per cent for this club."

He was keen to reassure supporters that his commitment will not waver regardless of the contractual uncertainty. "The fans don't need to worry because I will give my 100 per cent until the last day I'm here," he said.

Talks ongoing — but no guarantees

When asked whether negotiations over a new deal were still taking place, Mac Allister was guarded but hopeful: "Maybe. I don't know. It's going to depend on how I perform during this year. They are right to make the decision as well, but hopefully they change their minds."

The midfielder also revealed that the club's communication came through his representatives rather than directly to him. "There wasn't any direct conversation with me — it was with my agent. What I got from my agent was that they were not in a position to renew me," he said.

Mac Allister pointed to shared success as reason for his hurt. "We won a Premier League together, we've been through difficult times together and I always give my best. We will see what happens but of course it makes me a little bit sad," he concluded.
