Madibo Handed Five-Game Ban After Kone Leg Break at World Cup

2 hours ago·1 min

Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo has received a five-match suspension following the reckless challenge that left Canada's Ismael Kone with a broken leg during the FIFA World Cup.

Madibo, 29, was shown a red card in Qatar's heavy 6-0 defeat last Thursday after a foul that caused Kone to fracture both his tibia and fibula in his lower left leg. FIFA's disciplinary committee has confirmed the five-match ban for serious foul play, though the sanction remains open to appeal.

Kone, 24, who currently plays for Italian club Sassuolo, underwent surgery shortly after the incident in Vancouver. The former Watford midfielder will be sidelined for the remainder of the tournament as a result of the injury. In a gesture of goodwill, Madibo visited Kone in hospital following the match.

Canada's path forward

Canada still have an opportunity to advance through the group stage, with a final group fixture against Switzerland on Wednesday. A positive result could see them finish as group winners and secure a place in the last 32.

Qatar, meanwhile, face a must-win situation of their own — they must defeat Bosnia-Herzegovina to stand any realistic chance of progressing beyond the group stage.
