Manchester City's proposed £80m deal to sign Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo is on the brink of falling apart, with the two clubs unable to agree on the terms of a transfer.

City had entered into negotiations with Liverpool over the Netherlands international, with the Reds open to selling Gakpo on one condition — that they could bring in a replacement. That condition has proved difficult to satisfy.

Liverpool's search for a replacement stalls

Liverpool moved quickly to address their attacking options elsewhere, completing the signing of France forward Bradley Barcola from Paris St-Germain in a deal worth up to £123m on Monday. However, the Anfield club still require another wide option before they would sanction Gakpo's departure.

Liverpool had identified Brighton's Yankuba Minteh and Crystal Palace's Ismaila Sarr as potential targets, but the asking prices for both players have created a significant stumbling block. With Tuesday's transfer deadline approaching, Liverpool are now expected to retain Gakpo, 27, unless a deal for a new winger can be revived in time.

City turn attention to Ndiaye

With the Gakpo pursuit appearing to fade, Manchester City are now considering a pivot toward Everton forward Iliman Ndiaye. The Senegal international, 26, had been widely anticipated to complete a move to Tottenham, but City's sustained interest could see the Etihad club push forward with a bid for the winger before the window shuts.
