Manchester City have entered into talks with Liverpool over the potential signing of winger Cody Gakpo, with discussions also under way over the player's personal terms.

The move is advancing in City's favour, according to one source, with Tottenham Hotspur also having expressed interest in the Netherlands international. Liverpool are understood to be weighing up their options given that contact has come late in the transfer window.

City's winger shortage

The timing of City's pursuit reflects a pressing need on the flanks. The club allowed wide forwards Savio and Omar Marmoush to join Tottenham earlier this month, leaving manager Enzo Maresca with limited options on the wing.

The depth of that problem was exposed in Friday's Premier League win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, where City did not field a single recognised winger on the bench. Phil Foden started out wide — a position Maresca himself admitted is not the midfielder's natural role.

Jack Grealish was absent entirely against Palace, adding to City's concerns. The former Aston Villa man is attracting interest from Everton and Sunderland, and is believed to prefer a return to Everton, further reducing Maresca's attacking width.

Liverpool's busy window

Liverpool, meanwhile, are on the verge of completing a significant deal of their own. The club are set to sign Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola for an initial £106 million, a fee that could rise to £123 million, before Tuesday's transfer deadline.

Victor Munoz had already arrived at Anfield from Osasuna earlier in the summer, meaning Liverpool have been active across multiple positions in this window.

Tottenham had also targeted Gakpo earlier in the current window before ultimately moving to sign Savio and Marmoush from City instead.
