Manchester United Eye Calvin Bassey as Contract Situation Attracts European Interest

1 hour ago·2 min

Manchester United are monitoring Nigeria international Calvin Bassey, with the Fulham defender's expiring contract making him one of the more attractive targets ahead of a major defensive overhaul at Old Trafford.

Bassey has been a standout performer for Fulham this season under manager Alvaro Arbeloa, delivering quality and consistency even as the club have faced difficulties. His importance to the side has grown to the point where he has been handed the captain's armband.

According to TEAMtalk, United's football department have taken notice of his performances. Several other clubs are also assessing his availability as he enters the final months of his current deal.

Contract uncertainty at Craven Cottage

Bassey's contract at Fulham expires in the summer, though the club hold an option to extend it by one additional year. Fulham are keen to agree fresh terms with the defender, but that has not stopped rival clubs from intensifying their interest.

The 26-year-old — who turns 27 in December — has developed into one of the Premier League's more dependable defenders, capable of operating at centre-back and left-back. That versatility, combined with his top-flight experience, makes his situation particularly appealing to potential suitors.

United's defensive rebuild looms

United are facing significant decisions over their back line ahead of a wholesale rebuild planned for 2027. Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, and Harry Maguire are all out of contract next summer, leaving the club with pressing questions about their defensive options.

TEAMtalk also reported on Friday that Martinez is prepared to leave United in search of a new challenge, with Barcelona having made an enquiry about a potential transfer.

Wide competition for Bassey's signature

United will not have a clear run at Bassey. Newcastle United and Everton have both been tracking the Nigerian defender this season as they assess their own recruitment needs.

Interest extends beyond England, with Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund, and RB Leipzig all monitoring his progress. For Fulham, the priority remains securing the long-term future of a player who has become central to Arbeloa's plans.
