Manchester United are expected to make a formal approach for Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill, one of the standout performers of this summer's World Cup, according to a report from Argentine outlet Vamos Ciclon.

Gill distinguished himself throughout the tournament, recording more saves than any other goalkeeper. His most memorable contribution came in Paraguay's round-of-32 penalty shootout victory over Germany, a result that announced him to a global audience.

Representatives expecting an offer

Gill has since returned to Argentina to resume training with his club San Lorenzo, but the mood inside the club has shifted. Vamos Ciclon reports that speculation linking Gill to the Premier League had quietened after the World Cup before resurfacing this week — with the goalkeeper's representatives now said to be expecting a concrete bid from Manchester United.

San Lorenzo are reportedly already scouting for a successor, though no formal offer has been received by the club as yet. Olympiacos also made a move for the goalkeeper, but neither Gill nor San Lorenzo expressed any interest in that option.

A bargain release clause

A significant factor in United's reported interest is the financial terms attached to Gill's San Lorenzo contract. Vamos Ciclon states that his release clause stands at just $7 million (£5.5 million) — though the outlet adds, somewhat confusingly, that this figure represents the minimum from which San Lorenzo are willing to open negotiations. Even so, that valuation would make Gill an exceptional piece of transfer business for any Premier League club.

Goalkeeper remains a priority

The goalkeeping position has been a recurring concern at Old Trafford since David De Gea's exit in 2023. Andre Onana has struggled to win over supporters with a series of inconsistent displays, while Altay Bayindir has done little to press his claims in limited appearances.

Senne Lammens, who joined from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day, did provide some encouragement with a strong debut season. The 24-year-old Belgian endured a difficult moment coming off the bench against Spain in the World Cup quarter-finals, but he remains a viable long-term option at United.

Gill's arrival — whether as a starter or cover — would nonetheless represent a significant upgrade and add genuine competition to a department that has too often let the club down in recent seasons.
