Martínez Backs Ronaldo to Shine at 2030 World Cup

4 days ago·2 min

Portugal manager Roberto Martínez has declared that nobody should question Cristiano Ronaldo's capacity to compete at the 2030 World Cup — a tournament at which the forward would be 45 years old.

Speaking on Spanish radio programme El Larguero, Martínez pointed to Ronaldo's insatiable drive and daily discipline as the twin pillars underpinning his extraordinary career longevity.

The secret behind the hunger

"We've come to a conclusion: I believe Cristiano Ronaldo doesn't play to win a specific title, either collectively or individually. His secret isn't what he eats, it's his hunger," Martínez said.

"Whatever he wins, the next day he has the same hunger to improve. I think having that objective allows for longevity. I've worked with many, many players who, the day after winning a UEFA Champions League or a Ballon d'Or, don't have the same hunger."

Martínez added that the subject is taken seriously within his coaching staff: "He will fight for it. I think no one should doubt that — at least he has earned that right. Don't think that this isn't a topic of discussion and conversation within the coaching staff, because we would love to be able to pass on Cristiano Ronaldo's example to all young footballers in Portugal."

A sixth World Cup first

Portugal kick off their Group K campaign against Congo in Houston this summer, with Ronaldo set to make history by appearing at a sixth World Cup — a feat no player has ever achieved before.

The 2030 edition will be co-hosted by Portugal, Spain, and Morocco, meaning Ronaldo could potentially grace a home tournament at an age that would defy all conventional wisdom about elite footballers.

Dominant at Al Nassr

Since joining Al Nassr in January 2023, Ronaldo has been historically prolific for the Saudi club, netting 129 goals in 148 appearances across all competitions. His performances most recently powered Al Nassr to the Saudi Pro League title, reinforcing his standing as one of the most dominant forces in Asian football.
