Martinez Red Card Sinks Manchester United as Chelsea Cruise to 2-0 Victory

Lisandro Martinez's second-half red card capped a dismal collapse as Manchester United fell to a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, leaving head coach Michael Carrick's position under serious scrutiny.
Morgan Rogers opened the scoring five minutes into the second half, accelerating through a static United backline before lifting a composed finish over goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Cole Palmer then doubled Chelsea's advantage from the penalty spot in the 64th minute, after Martinez was dismissed for raising an arm into the face of Wesley Fofana — a decision confirmed by VAR.
Martinez's madness compounds a miserable afternoon
The dismissal was particularly damaging given its circumstances. Martinez had been booked just three minutes earlier for fouling Rogers, making his subsequent moment of recklessness all the more costly. The Argentine had only been handed his second start since publicly criticising the club's hierarchy, and his afternoon ended in the worst possible fashion.
Palmer, as clinical as ever from 12 yards, left Lammens with no chance to seal a comfortable win for Chelsea and heap further misery on their visitors.
United's first-half promise comes to nothing
The result is made all the more painful by the fact that Manchester United had shown genuine promise before the interval. Bruno Fernandes, restored to the starting lineup after being dropped to the bench — and left unused — in the 3-0 loss to Bournemouth, appeared to sharpen United's play in the first half. Carrick had reinstated Fernandes following the captain's public criticism of the manager's tactics after that defeat to Como.
United fashioned a series of chances but failed to take any of them. Fernandes spurned the most glaring opportunity, firing over the bar when left unmarked from Bryan Mbeumo's cross. Amad Diallo also went close on two occasions, only to be denied each time by goalkeeper Mike Penders.
That profligacy proved fatal. Once Rogers broke the deadlock, United had no answer — and Martinez's red card ensured a truly wretched afternoon for Carrick's side.
Carrick under mounting pressure
The defeat extends Manchester United's winless run to nine matches across all competitions and leaves them just one point above the Premier League relegation zone. Questions over Carrick's future are growing louder, with the club's results showing no signs of improvement heading into November.
