Martinez 'Very Satisfied' After Portugal Edge Nigeria 2-1 in World Cup Warm-Up

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez said he was "very satisfied" after his side defeated Nigeria's Super Eagles 2-1 in their final warm-up match before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, played at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria on Wednesday.
Pedro Neto broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute, converting a cutback from Diogo Dalot with a composed finish into the bottom corner — his first goal in four months.
Nigeria levelled through Akor Adams in the 37th minute. Adams combined neatly with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru before slotting home to give the Super Eagles a deserved share of the game.
Substitute Francisco Conceicao restored Portugal's advantage 15 minutes from time, dancing past his marker and driving into the bottom corner from a tight angle to wrap up the win.
Martinez praises squad depth and attitude
Speaking to O Jogo, Martinez highlighted the value of being able to rotate his entire squad across the two warm-up fixtures. "Very satisfied. It's difficult to use all the players. It's the first time we've been able to. We used that very well. It puts more pressure on the group," he said.
The Portugal manager also singled out João Félix for praise, describing him as being in outstanding form. "João Félix is in very good form, he's had a brutal season. He's intelligent. He was unlucky, the ball crossed the line and he deserved the goal," Martinez added.
Martinez noted that Nigeria presented a challenge similar to what Portugal could face deeper in the tournament. "It was the right opponent. A team very similar to Congo, with physical strength, the ability to exploit spaces. As a test it was very good, we can rotate eleven players and win the game. It shows the attitude of our group and I'm very satisfied with what we did in the two games," he concluded.
