Former Rangers and Sunderland striker Ally McCoist has called on Harvey Elliott to make a move to Newcastle United before the summer transfer window closes, warning that another season of limited football could prove costly to the Liverpool winger's career.

Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist argued that Elliott would not look out of place in Eddie Howe's squad, drawing a direct comparison to the type of wide player Newcastle have lost in recent windows.

"His contract is up next summer, so he's not going to cost a King's ransom. What are we talking, £15-20 million? Something like that," McCoist said.

The pundit also raised the possibility of Elliott joining a newly promoted side but quickly settled on Newcastle as the more suitable destination.

"He wouldn't look out of place in Newcastle's team and they're looking for players who are similar to the ones they've lost. Obviously, Anthony Gordon springs to mind."

McCoist was emphatic that the stakes are high for Elliott personally: "The most important thing, and it's massively important for Harvey Elliott this season, last season was a write-off, he can't afford another one like that."

Elliott's situation at Liverpool

Elliott is in the final year of his contract at Anfield and was notably absent from Liverpool's matchday squad for their opening Premier League fixture against Newcastle United.

The winger spent last season on loan at Aston Villa, but a lack of regular appearances meant that a permanent purchase clause was never activated. With his future at Liverpool increasingly uncertain, securing consistent playing time has become the overriding concern for the 21-year-old.
