Rangers manager Derek McInnes has publicly challenged Emmanuel Fernández to return to his best after a troubled opening to the 2026–27 season, citing costly errors in matches against Jagiellonia Białystok and St. Mirren that have raised concerns about the Nigerian defender's concentration.
Fernández arrived at Ibrox as a revelation last season, claiming Rangers' Player of the Season award and a place in the PFA Team of the Season. His performances attracted significant interest from several elite European clubs. Yet his second campaign has begun with a series of lapses — including giving away a penalty — that have put him under the microscope.
McInnes issues challenge
Speaking to The Scottish Sun, McInnes acknowledged that players must actively work to regain peak form, and he made clear that Fernández is no exception.
