Mexico City FIFA Fan Fest Under Threat as Teachers' Union Plans Protests

last week·1 min

The FIFA fan festival planned for Mexico City to mark the opening ceremony and first match of the 2026 World Cup may need to find a new home — and it could all come down to a teachers' union protest.

Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum had been scheduled to attend the event, but demonstrations organised by the country's teachers' union are now threatening to force organisers to relocate the celebration entirely.

The fan fest is designed to be a central gathering point for supporters during the tournament, which the United States, Mexico, and Canada are co-hosting. A disruption to the flagship Mexico City event would represent an embarrassing setback at the very start of the competition.

No alternative venue has been confirmed publicly, and it remains unclear whether authorities will be able to resolve the situation ahead of the tournament's opening days.
