Mexico Cruise Into World Cup Last 16 With Commanding Win Over Ecuador

2 hours ago·2 min

Mexico advanced to the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Tuesday night, beating Ecuador 2-0 in front of a roaring Azteca Stadium crowd of 80,824 — setting up a potential heavyweight clash with England in the next round.

Kick-off was pushed back by a full hour after a severe thunderstorm swept across Mexico City, forcing officials to wait for lightning to clear. Once play got under way, Javier Aguirre's side wasted no time establishing complete control.

Quinones and Jimenez do the damage

Mexico came out with a ferocious intensity from the first whistle, pressing Ecuador high up the pitch and overwhelming their South American opponents with relentless energy and slick combinations.

The opener arrived in the 22nd minute. Julian Quinones found space down the left flank, cut inside, and drove a powerful effort into the top corner to give the hosts a deserved lead.

Before the interval, Mexico doubled their advantage. More defensive sloppiness from Ecuador gifted Quinones a second moment of involvement — he squared the ball for Raul Jimenez, who hammered it home with a composed finish to make it 2-0.

Ecuador's frustration boils over

Ecuador were unable to mount a meaningful challenge after the break. Mexico controlled possession with ease, slowing the tempo when the game demanded it and closing off any realistic route back into the contest for their opponents.

The night turned even darker for Ecuador deep into stoppage time. Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie was shown a straight red card following a confrontation with substitute Santiago Gimenez, after Hincapie appeared to cover his mouth during the altercation.

A highlight came midway through the second half when goalkeeper Hernan Galindez kept Ecuador alive with a brilliant fingertip save to deny Mexico captain Cesar Montes, though it ultimately changed nothing.

England await?

Mexico now look ahead to a mouthwatering last-16 encounter. Should England beat DR Congo in their own round-of-32 fixture on Wednesday, they will travel to the Azteca Stadium — a venue with historic significance in World Cup lore — for what would be one of the ties of the tournament.
