Middlesbrough have completed the signing of Sebastian Berhalter from Vancouver Whitecaps, bringing the United States international midfielder to the Riverside on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old racked up 167 appearances for the MLS club, contributing 20 goals across his time with Vancouver Whitecaps. He arrives in England as a proven performer in North American football.

Manager Kim Hellberg could hand Berhalter his debut as early as Friday, 7 August, when Middlesbrough face Wrexham in their Carabao Cup first-round tie.

"This is where I want to be. I want to keep getting better as a player and person, and this is a great place to do it,"

Berhalter told the club's official website, expressing his enthusiasm for the move.

The midfielder has a notable connection to England — he was born in London while his father, Gregg Berhalter, was playing for Crystal Palace. Gregg would later go on to manage the United States national team, coaching his son at international level.
