Bafana Bafana were made to work hard for the result after Czech Republic created a string of clear opportunities throughout the match yet failed to capitalise on any of them — a profligacy they would ultimately rue.

South Africa held firm under sustained pressure, and when the penalty arrived deep into the second half, Mokoena kept his composure to slot home and ensure the Africans did not leave Atlanta empty-handed.

The draw gives South Africa their first point of the tournament, a foundation to build on as the group stage continues.
