Paul Pogba's bid to revive his football career appears to be nearing its end, with AS Monaco reportedly in talks to terminate the 33-year-old's contract by mutual agreement, less than two years after he signed with the Ligue 1 club.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Monaco have initiated negotiations for a financial settlement that would bring Pogba's deal — originally set to expire in 2027 — to an early close.

Another injury derails Pogba's comeback

The trigger for the move is a fresh thigh injury sustained during pre-season training, the latest in a lengthy sequence of physical setbacks that have plagued his time in the principality. Across the entire 2025/26 season, the former France international made just six substitute appearances, accumulating a mere 115 minutes of competitive football.

This summer's warm-up friendlies offered little more hope — Pogba featured for only 45 minutes — and Monaco appear unwilling to wait any longer with the transfer window still open.

A troubled road back to the pitch

Pogba had joined Monaco on a free transfer in June 2025 following a career-threatening doping ban. He had initially received a four-year suspension in late 2023 after testing positive for elevated levels of DHEA during his time at Juventus. The Court of Arbitration for Sport subsequently reduced that sanction on appeal, allowing him to return to professional football in early 2025.

Yet the comeback never truly took hold. Knee problems and recurring muscular injuries made consistent football impossible throughout his single season at the club.

The fading legacy of a once-generational talent

The situation represents a stark fall from grace for one of the most celebrated midfielders of his generation. Pogba remains Manchester United's record signing, having rejoined the club from Juventus in 2016 for a then-world record £89 million. During his peak, he claimed four consecutive Serie A titles with Juventus, scored in France's victorious 2018 World Cup Final in Russia, and won both the UEFA Europa League and the League Cup with Manchester United.

Since departing Old Trafford for a second time in 2022 to return to Juventus, his career has been defined by chronic injury and the doping controversy, leaving one of football's great talents without a meaningful run of games at the highest level.
