Morata Calls Atlético Madrid Exit the Biggest Mistake of His Career

6 hours ago·1 min

Álvaro Morata has described his decision to leave Atlético Madrid as the single biggest error of his professional life, admitting he would surrender every trophy he has ever lifted in exchange for just one title with the club.

Speaking to former Atlético midfielder Mario Suarez, Morata was candid about his regret.

"My decision to leave Atletico Madrid was the biggest mistake of my career. I would trade all the titles I've won for just one with Atletico — just one. Atletico is a club I love. I was very happy there,"
he said.

A prolific farewell in Madrid

Morata's final stint at Atlético, which ran from 2022 to 2024, was among the most productive of his career. He registered 36 goals across 93 appearances, establishing himself as one of the most reliable strikers in Diego Simeone's system.

The first half of his last season was particularly sharp — 18 goals in 27 matches across La Liga and the UEFA Champions League. His partnership with Antoine Griezmann proved lethal, and Simeone leaned heavily on his aerial threat, intelligent movement, and ability to hold the ball up and create space for runners.

Derby heroics against Real Madrid

One of the defining moments of Morata's second Atlético chapter came in September 2023, when he headed home twice in a 3-1 derby win over Real Madrid. That brace underlined his value at the club and endeared him further to the Atlético faithful.

After departing, Morata moved first to AC Milan and then to Galatasaray, but his words suggest neither move has dulled the affection he carries for Atlético Madrid.
