Manchester United's midfield rebuild has dominated headlines throughout the summer, with manager Michael Carrick investing heavily in new additions — yet a ready-made solution may already be present in his squad.

A costly rebuild with gaps still to fill

United have committed £83m to bring in Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. The departures of Casemiro, whose contract expired at the end of June, and Manuel Ugarte, ruled out for months with a knee injury, have piled pressure on Carrick to add a third midfielder.

Names thrown into the mix include Bournemouth pair Alex Scott and Tyler Adams, as well as Roma's Manu Kone. There has also been speculation linking Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni to Old Trafford, with Real Madrid reportedly open to discussing his situation amid their own pursuit of Manchester City's Rodri.

Even so, Tchouameni's expected salary and potential transfer fee sit uncomfortably with United's budgetary discipline — particularly at a time when the club also needs a left-sided player and a forward to support Benjamin Sesko, who is recovering from a shin problem.

Mount and Santos: an early but promising combination

United's opening two pre-season fixtures, against Wrexham in Helsinki and Rosenborg in Trondheim, have offered a compelling early glimpse of what Mason Mount could bring to this midfield.

Santos has looked at home sitting deep — winning the ball off defenders, identifying passing lanes, and pressing opponents relentlessly. That defensive diligence frees Mount to operate higher up the pitch and use his considerable technical quality to advance United's play.
