Mourinho Eyes Bernardo Silva as First Real Madrid Signing in Stunning Free-Agent Move

6 days ago·2 min

Real Madrid are closing in on the free-agent signing of Bernardo Silva, with the club growing increasingly confident of landing the former Manchester City midfielder as one of Jose Mourinho's first recruits since his return to the Bernabéu.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Thursday that Madrid had submitted an official contract offer to Bernardo, describing the pursuit as a "surprise move in the last 24 hours." Romano added that the two parties are now in "advanced talks," with Madrid placed ahead of all rival clubs in the race for his signature.

A surprise move from the Bernabéu

Bernardo, 30, becomes a free agent this summer after nine years at Manchester City, where he won six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, and a Champions League. Across 460 appearances for City, he scored 76 goals — including three against Real Madrid in two separate Champions League encounters.

Romano stated: "Real Madrid are in advanced talks to sign Bernardo Silva as a free agent. Bernardo Silva is wanted by Jose Mourinho, so Real Madrid are now ready to attack and try to close the deal as soon as possible. The official bid is already in the hands of the former Manchester City midfielder."

Competition from La Liga rivals

Barcelona had been linked with the Portuguese international, but Romano reports that there is "nothing advanced or concrete" on their side. Atletico Madrid have also been credited with interest, though Madrid appear to have moved decisively to take the lead.

Mourinho back at the Bernabéu

Mourinho's reappointment as Real Madrid manager was announced on Thursday evening, with the Portuguese coach set to officially begin work at the club on July 13. President Florentino Pérez had pledged Mourinho's return as part of his re-election campaign, and has now delivered on that promise.

There are currently no plans for a formal presentation ceremony. According to Sky Sports, Mourinho has opted against a press conference or public welcome event, preferring instead to focus immediately on squad-building ahead of the new season.

Securing Bernardo Silva would represent a statement of intent — a Champions League winner with vast experience at the highest level, shaped in part by years working under serial title-winner Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
