Jose Mourinho's second spell as Real Madrid manager begins in earnest this Tuesday when Inter Milan arrive at the Santiago Bernabeu for a Champions League encounter — a fixture loaded with history for the Portuguese tactician.

Sixteen years ago, it was at that same ground where Mourinho lifted the Champions League trophy after guiding Inter to a 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the 2010 final. That triumph, his second European crown following Porto's win in 2004, also marked the final match of his Inter Milan reign. Days later, he was named Real Madrid manager for the first time.

The trophy that eluded him

Mourinho's first stint at Real Madrid produced silverware — the Copa del Rey in 2011 and La Liga in 2012 — as well as three successive Champions League semi-final appearances. Yet the European Cup proved beyond his reach. Real were eliminated by Barcelona in 2011, fell to Bayern Munich on penalties in 2012, and were beaten by Borussia Dortmund in 2013 before Mourinho departed that same year.

He is, however, determined not to let the past cast a shadow over what comes next.
