Newcastle have confirmed the arrival of midfielder Aladji Bamba from Monaco in a deal worth up to £35.5m, with an initial fee of £30m and a further £5.5m in potential add-ons.

Bamba has put pen to paper on a five-year contract at St. James' Park and will pull on the No 8 shirt — a number last worn by Sandro Tonali before his £100m departure to Tottenham earlier this summer.

Manager Eddie Howe welcomed the signing with enthusiasm, highlighting the young midfielder's versatility and upside. "I'm really pleased to see Aladji become a Newcastle player. He's another exciting, young signing who we're really looking forward to working with," Howe said.

Howe also pointed to Bamba's trajectory since emerging from Monaco's ranks as a key reason for the club's interest. "His development since breaking through at Monaco has been really impressive and something we believe we can help him build on," the manager added.

A deeper-lying midfielder with an all-round game

Bamba primarily operates in a deeper midfield role, though Howe noted his capacity to influence play across the entire pitch — qualities the 24-year-old demonstrated in both Ligue 1 and the Champions League during the past season with Monaco.

The signing continues Newcastle's busy summer transfer activity as the club looks to bolster its squad ahead of the new campaign.
