Tottenham Hotspur have opened their Premier League campaign with back-to-back defeats and without a single goal to their name, as Newcastle United claimed a convincing 2-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa were the match-winners for Newcastle, continuing their encouraging form from the opening weekend and leaving Roberto De Zerbi's expensively assembled squad with serious questions to answer.

A summer of spending, a start of struggles

Spurs invested £320 million across eight new signings this summer, yet there has been little sign of that outlay translating into results. The hosts were booed from the pitch at full time, just seven days after a 3-0 hammering at Brentford in their first fixture of the season.

Forward Omar Marmoush made his debut for the club, but could not unlock a Newcastle defence that remained largely composed throughout. Meanwhile, £75 million winger Savio was unavailable due to muscle fatigue — an early injury setback for De Zerbi's rebuild.

There was a bitter subplot in the stands, too. Sandro Tonali, who departed Newcastle for Spurs in a £100 million deal, was greeted with pointed mockery from the travelling Newcastle supporters as their side secured a first win of the season.

How Newcastle took control

Tottenham were the more threatening side in the opening 45 minutes. Newcastle goalkeeper Lucas Hornicek was forced into saves from Mathys Tel and Jan Paul van Hecke to keep the scoreline level at the break.

But the second half belonged to Newcastle. Elanga, who endured a difficult campaign last season before catching the eye with a goal against Liverpool on the opening weekend, collected the ball inside the area and swivelled sharply before seeing his shot deflect off the post and into the net — a moment of individual quality that broke the deadlock.

De Zerbi threw on three substitutes in an attempt to spark a response, but Tottenham never genuinely threatened an equaliser. Newcastle wrapped up the points through Wissa, another forward who struggled under former manager Eddie Howe but appears revitalised this term. Substitute Nick Woltemade glanced a header from a corner into the six-yard box, and Wissa — with his back to goal — hooked the ball acrobatically over his head and into the net.

The travelling support celebrated loudly; the home crowd's groans told the full story. Tottenham's £320 million summer is yet to bear any fruit whatsoever.
