Newcastle United Close In on Bazoumana Toure as Medical Looms

Newcastle United are on the brink of completing the signing of Bazoumana Toure, the 20-year-old Ivory Coast winger currently at Bundesliga club Hoffenheim, with a medical understood to be imminent.
Toure would become the Magpies' second summer arrival, following young French goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, who joined from Reims last week. His recruitment has been made possible by a wave of major outgoings at St James' Park.
Gordon and Tonali exits fund Newcastle's rebuild
Newcastle have agreed a deal worth £100 million to sell Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali to Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, while winger Anthony Gordon has already headed to Barcelona. Those two departures have freed up significant funds for manager Eddie Howe to reshape his squad, even as the club navigates a compliance agreement with UEFA over breaches of the governing body's financial regulations.
According to The Athletic, Newcastle intend to reinvest the proceeds from the Tonali sale, with Howe targeting a goalkeeper, at least one full-back, two midfielders — should Joe Willock also depart — and at least one attacker.
Toure emerged as a priority attacking target after Newcastle missed out on Victor Munoz, and the club expect the Hoffenheim wide man to fill the creative void left by Gordon's exit. The Athletic notes that supporters will remain anxious until the deal is officially announced and confirmed.
Toure's route to Newcastle
The winger came through ASEC Mimosas, the most decorated club in Ivory Coast, before moving to Europe. Swedish side Hammarby signed him following a trial in Stockholm, and he went on to make 23 Allsvenskan appearances before Hoffenheim secured his services. He has continued to develop steadily at the Bundesliga club.
Primarily deployed on the left flank, Toure is regarded by The Athletic as a direct, starting-calibre replacement for Gordon. He made his senior international debut for Ivory Coast as recently as last October and has since earned nine caps.
His World Cup campaign ended on Tuesday when Erling Haaland's late winner sealed a 2026 FIFA World Cup round-of-32 victory for Norway over Ivory Coast, setting up a round of 16 tie with Brazil. Toure came on as a late substitute at Dallas Stadium, finishing the tournament with 80 minutes of action across the Ivorians' games.
Newcastle still in the market
Beyond Toure, Newcastle are expected to return to the transfer market for a top-level central midfielder to offset the loss of Tonali — who will become Tottenham Hotspur's club-record signing, in a deal reportedly structured as £92.5 million upfront with £7.5 million in add-ons believed to be tied to the UEFA Champions League.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur have moved aggressively in this window, adding Tonali to previous arrivals Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United and Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion, with that trio alone costing in excess of £200 million combined. Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have also arrived on free transfers from Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively.
