Raphael Claus to Referee USA vs Bosnia-Herzegovina at FIFA World Cup

2 hours ago·2 min

Brazilian official Raphael Claus has been appointed to referee the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match between USA and Bosnia-Herzegovina, to be played at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 5pm PT and 8pm ET — 1am UK time.

The path to the round of 32

USA arrive at this knockout tie in strong form, having won their opening two group games against Paraguay and Australia. A late defeat to Turkey in the final group match did not stop them from finishing top of their group.

Bosnia-Herzegovina reached the last 32 as third-place finishers in their group. They opened with a 3-1 victory over Qatar before suffering a 4-1 loss to Switzerland. A 1-1 draw with Canada in their final outing proved enough to advance.

Claus brings Copa America experience

Claus, 46, has been on the FIFA referee list since 2015 and is regarded as one of South America's premier officials. His highest-profile assignment came when he took charge of the 2024 Copa America final between Argentina and Colombia. He has also officiated a Copa Libertadores semi-final between River Plate and Boca Juniors.

This will be Claus' second appearance at this World Cup — he previously oversaw Spain's 4-0 group-stage win over Saudi Arabia. At the 2022 edition, he refereed England's 6-2 victory over Iran, a match that included a controversial late penalty for Iran, as well as Morocco's 2-1 win over Canada.

Full officiating team

Claus will be assisted by fellow Brazilians Danilo Manis and Rodrigo Figueiredo on the lines. Argentina's Dario Herrera has been named fourth official.

VAR responsibilities fall to Juan Soto of Venezuela, with Nicolas Gallo of Colombia serving as assistant VAR.
