Newcastle United Sign Bazoumana Toure for £43m — What He Brings to Tyneside

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Ivory Coast winger Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim in a deal worth £43 million, bringing one of the Bundesliga's most exciting young talents to the Premier League.

The 20-year-old's rise has been nothing short of remarkable. Toure only arrived at Swedish club Hammarby in 2024, left for Hoffenheim a year later, and — after just 18 months in the Bundesliga — has now boarded a private jet to Tyneside to realise his long-held dream of playing in England's top flight.

A long-term replacement for Gordon

The signing addresses a pressing need. Newcastle had been searching for a left winger since Anthony Gordon's £69.3m departure to Barcelona in June. The club missed out on Victor Munoz, who chose Liverpool over Newcastle after leaving Osasuna, making Toure's arrival all the more welcome.

The finances were made possible in part by the agreed sale of midfielder Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth up to £100 million. That exit created the financial headroom Newcastle needed under football's spending regulations to reinvest across the squad.

Toure fits precisely the profile Newcastle have been targeting — young, ambitious, and genuinely eager to be at the club. That last quality carries real weight after a difficult 12 months in the transfer market for Eddie Howe's side.

Elite Bundesliga numbers

His performances at Hoffenheim — who narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification last season — were eye-catching. Among all Bundesliga forwards in 2025-26, Toure ranked first for successful crosses (39), joint-second for assists (nine), joint-third for completed dribbles (48), and fourth for both chances created (45) and big chances created (11).

He also won 152 duels and recovered possession 127 times in his final league campaign, underlining a work rate that belies his age.

The personality behind the numbers

Those who know Toure well speak about him with warmth. Mikael Hjelmberg, the Hammarby sporting director who first brought him to Europe from ASEC Mimosas in Ivory Coast, says he "fell in love" with the player the moment he watched him. "It's his personality," Hjelmberg said. "He's always smiling, always positive."

Former Hammarby team-mate Nahir Besara echoes that assessment — and points to a coachability that sets Toure apart. "He could take directions from the coaches and the players, and do it directly on the pitch," Besara said. He recalled how Toure, having never scored a header, was told by coach Kim Hellberg on the eve of a match to attack the near post — and went on to head in two goals that afternoon.

Besara also revealed that on his final day at Hammarby, Toure sent him money as a parting gift of thanks. "Of course I sent it back," Besara said, "but it was an amazing gesture."

Challenges ahead on Tyneside

The Premier League represents a significant step up. Toure is still developing and must sharpen his finishing, adjust to the physical demands of English football, and learn the system Howe demands. None of that will happen overnight.

Yet Toure's entire career has been built on adapting quickly to new environments, and those around him expect that pattern to continue. "I know he will be really successful," Besara said. "Mark my words."
