Nigeria Will Be a Big Miss at the 2026 World Cup, Says Terry

Former England captain John Terry has voiced his regret at Nigeria's absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the Super Eagles as a team the tournament will sorely lack.
Terry made the remarks during a virtual roundtable organised by SuperSport, where he emphasised that Nigeria brings an unmatched combination of gifted players, passionate supporters, and a deep footballing tradition to any major competition.
"Nigeria will be a big miss. This is a World Cup for participants who haven't had the opportunity to play in the tournament. I would have loved to see a top team like Nigeria there because they've got some great individuals. They're a great nation. So, yeah, they fall under that category for me."
Terry went further, suggesting the Super Eagles would have had a genuine chance of progressing deep into the competition. "I think they are a big miss because Nigeria probably would have gone further in the competition, but unfortunately, one side's loss is another's gain," he added.
The former Chelsea and England defender also made a light-hearted remark about former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel, noting that Mikel's frustration at Nigeria's absence was partly personal. "I know Mikel Obi is very upset that they're not there. It means he can't do more commentating on the World Cup. That's why he was upset," Terry said.
Portugal edge Nigeria in World Cup warm-up
Elsewhere, Nigeria rounded off their pre-tournament schedule with a 2-1 defeat to Portugal in an international friendly, as the European side completed their World Cup preparations with back-to-back victories.
Pedro Neto put Portugal ahead before Akor Adams drew the Super Eagles level. However, substitute Francisco Conceição settled the contest with a curling effort into the far corner, handing Portugal the win.
Portugal head into the 2026 World Cup on the back of successive victories, while Nigeria — already absent from the main tournament — were left to reflect on a spirited but ultimately frustrating performance.
The 2026 World Cup officially kicked off with co-hosts Mexico facing South Africa in Group A.
