Ogbu Ruled Out of Nigeria's Portugal Friendly With Achilles Injury

2 weeks ago·1 min

Nigeria centre-back Igoh Ogbu has been ruled out of the Super Eagles' friendly against Portugal after suffering a suspected ruptured left Achilles tendon in training.

Super Eagles Media Officer Promise Efoghe confirmed the news, stating that Ogbu picked up the injury during a training session on Saturday evening in Leiria. "Defender, Igho Ogbu has been ruled out of the friendly against Portugal after sustaining an injury in training this evening. Team medics describe the situation as a suspected rupture of his left achilles tendon," Efoghe said.

The 26-year-old will now return to his club, Slavia Prague, to undergo treatment and begin his rehabilitation programme.

Recent involvement with the Super Eagles

Ogbu had featured in both of Nigeria's matches at the Unity Cup invitational tournament last month, and had started in the Super Eagles' 2-2 draw against Poland on Wednesday — before being replaced by Semi Ajayi at half-time.

Nigeria are scheduled to face Portugal at the Estádio Municipal Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria on Wednesday, and will now have to cope without Ogbu at the back.
