Olise Reveals Number 10 Is His Preferred Position Despite Wing Role at Bayern Munich

Michael Olise has admitted that he feels most at home as a number 10, even though both Bayern Munich and France regularly field him on the right wing.

Speaking to L'Équipe, Olise was candid about where he sees his best football. "Where do I feel most comfortable? I think it's as a number 10. It's a freer role. I grew up playing as a number 10. So for me, it feels more natural," he said.

He acknowledged the gap between preference and current reality. "Well, maybe not at the moment, because I'm playing on the wing today, but I think that's what feels most natural to me," Olise added.

Street football roots

The Bayern Munich forward also traced the origins of his creative, instinctive style back to informal games as a child.

"I'd say it comes from street football. We'd play outside with my brother, kicking the ball against the wall, doing 1v1s and all that. It's a different kind of football, but it's definitely a way to learn," he told L'Équipe.

Olise described those sessions as a space of pure freedom rather than structured learning. "Football, in those conditions, is just freedom. It wasn't learning in the strict sense either. I simply enjoyed playing football. I loved it, plain and simple. Well, I think everyone loves it when they're young," he said.

A season to remember

Despite his personal preference for a central role, Olise has thrived on the flank this season — and the numbers prove it. He recorded 22 goals and 29 assists across all competitions for Bayern Munich, earning the Bundesliga Player of the Season award in the process.

His performances also helped Bayern Munich secure a domestic double, underscoring just how influential the 23-year-old has become in Bavaria — whatever position he wears on his back.
