Omar Al Ali to Referee New Zealand vs Egypt in High-Stakes Group G Clash

1 hour ago·2 min

The FIFA World Cup Group G clash between New Zealand and Egypt at BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, will be officiated by Omar Al Ali — a referee from the United Arab Emirates who is stepping onto the World Cup stage for the very first time.

Kick-off is scheduled for 8pm local time, or 2am UK time, with both sides desperate for a result that could secure their path to the knockout rounds ahead of the final group game.

A wide-open group

Group G has emerged as one of the most competitive and unpredictable pools at this summer's World Cup. Egypt were held to a 1-1 draw by Belgium in their tournament opener, while New Zealand twice led Iran before settling for a 2-2 stalemate. Neither side has yet found their footing — making this encounter a genuine six-pointer.

Belgium and Iran also met earlier on Sunday, meaning Group G is in a state of flux heading into this pivotal fixture.

Al Ali's big moment

At 38 years old, Omar Al Ali will take charge of his first World Cup match. He has been active on the international refereeing circuit since 2015 and is a familiar face in both the UAE Pro League and the AFC Champions League. He also served as a backup official during last summer's Club World Cup.

Mohamed Al-Hammadi, also from the UAE, and Qatar's Taleb Al-Marri will run the lines as assistant referees. Peru's Kevin Ortega will serve as the fourth official, with fellow Peruvian Michael Orue acting as reserve referee.

VAR team

The video assistant referee operation will be led by Mohammed Khamid of the UAE, with Australia's Shaun Evans supporting in the booth. American official Armando Villarreal completes the VAR panel as support VAR.
