Oxlade-Chamberlain Commits to Celtic With Fresh One-Year Deal

2 hours ago·2 min

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has extended his stay at Celtic by signing a new one-year contract, the Scottish Premiership champions have confirmed.

The 35-cap England international, 32, arrived at the Glasgow club in February after spending six months without a club following the termination of his contract at Besiktas. He marked his debut in memorable fashion — netting a last-minute winner against Livingston — before going on to make 12 appearances in total for the club.

Seven of those outings came from the bench, yet Oxlade-Chamberlain played a meaningful role in Celtic's remarkable turnaround under then interim manager Martin O'Neill. The club retained the Scottish Premiership title on the final day, overhauling long-time leaders Heart of Midlothian, and also lifted the Scottish Cup to complete a memorable domestic double.

O'Neill's backing earns Oxlade-Chamberlain a second season

That contribution proved sufficient for O'Neill — since appointed permanently as Celtic manager — to hand the former Southampton, Arsenal, and Liverpool midfielder another year at the club.

Oxlade-Chamberlain expressed his excitement about the new deal on the Celtic club website. "It was an incredible time last season and to be part of that success in winning the league and Scottish Cup was so special," he said. "I'm really excited to be back and I'm looking forward to meeting up with the boys and getting to work ahead of what will hopefully be another successful season."

His partner, Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards, had previously used social media to make clear her own enthusiasm for the couple remaining in Scotland, a sentiment the player has now made official through pen on paper.

Pre-season schedule

Celtic's squad are currently preparing to travel to Ireland this weekend, where they will face Shelbourne in their opening pre-season fixture on Tuesday. Oxlade-Chamberlain is expected to link up with the group at a subsequent training camp in Portugal.

Despite the activity surrounding contract renewals, Celtic are yet to bring in any new signings ahead of the coming season.
