Cape Verde Leave World Cup as Heroes After Pushing Argentina to Extra Time

Cape Verde's extraordinary debut at the FIFA World Cup came to an end on Friday night in Miami, where the Blue Sharks pushed defending champions Argentina all the way to extra time before falling 3-2 in a gripping round-of-32 encounter.
Bubista's side refused to surrender twice after going behind, and came agonisingly close to forcing a penalty shootout — only for an own goal from Diney Borges, following a Lionel Messi corner in the 111th minute, to end one of the most courageous performances the tournament has ever witnessed.
Messi breaks the deadlock
Argentina took the lead in the 29th minute when Lisandro Martinez sent a precise ball in behind the Cape Verde defence for Messi, who controlled it calmly and lifted a finish over goalkeeper Vozinha. It was Messi's 20th World Cup goal, extending his lead in the Golden Boot race.
Cape Verde, however, were undeterred. They had already navigated a demanding group containing Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia without losing, and they were not about to be intimidated by the occasion.
Duarte stuns the champions
Argentina appeared content to manage the game after half-time, and Cape Verde made them pay. In the 59th minute, a sharp attack down the right created space inside the penalty area, where Deroy Duarte stroked a composed finish low through the legs of Lisandro Martinez and past Emiliano Martinez to level at 1-1.
The equaliser transformed the atmosphere. The Blue Sharks surged with confidence, while the world champions grew visibly anxious. Goalkeeper Vozinha then played a crucial role, producing several important saves — including one to deny Messi at close range — to keep Cape Verde alive as the match moved into extra time.
Cabral's stunning strike
Argentina regained the lead just two minutes into extra time. Lisandro Martinez reacted quickest to a loose ball from a corner and fired past Vozinha at the near post to make it 2-1.
Cape Verde refused to accept defeat. Sidny Lopes Cabral delivered one of the goals of the tournament, curling a magnificent strike from the edge of the area beyond Emiliano Martinez to restore parity once more. It was a finish that embodied everything Cape Verde had shown throughout the competition — fearless, technically brilliant, and full of belief.
Own goal ends the dream
With ten minutes of extra time remaining, Messi's corner swept into the Cape Verde box, causing panic in the defence. The ball ricocheted in off Borges to hand Argentina a 3-2 lead they would not relinquish. It was a cruel conclusion to a campaign that had captured the imagination of the continent and beyond.
Even in those closing moments, Cape Verde pushed forward, forcing Argentina to defend with discomfort until the final whistle. Argentina now advance to face Egypt in the round of 16.
A historic debut to be proud of
Cape Verde depart the World Cup having made history at every turn. They emerged unbeaten from a group featuring Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia, then came within moments of eliminating the defending champions. The Blue Sharks did not simply take part — they competed, inspired, and proved beyond doubt that smaller African nations belong on the biggest stage.
