Parkinson Stays Silent on Moreno Links as Wrexham Eye Championship Return

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has declined to comment on reports connecting the Championship club with Argentine defender Matias Moreno, dismissing transfer speculation with characteristic restraint.
Outlets have reported that the north Wales side have struck a deal with Italian club Fiorentina for the 22-year-old, though Parkinson was unwilling to be pinned down on the story.
"I think if we end up signing every player we're linked with, we'd have about 40 players in the building just now," Parkinson said. "From our point of view, we're concentrating on the lads we've got."
Building on last season's foundations
Wrexham are gearing up for their second consecutive Championship campaign, having narrowly missed the play-offs in May. Pre-season has taken the club across two continents, with fixtures in both Europe and the United States on the schedule.
"This pre-season has been about focusing on the group we worked so hard to put together last year and getting them together as a group, and building on what we did last season and getting more out of every single player," Parkinson said.
On the possibility of further recruitment, Parkinson acknowledged the door remains open — but only for the right additions. "At the moment, if the right player comes available and we feel they're going to enhance this group, then obviously we'll make a move," he said. "A lot of that work was done last season and if there are some additions, they'll be ones we feel can really improve us, obviously."
Pre-season schedule in full swing
Wrexham opened their pre-season with a 0-0 draw against Polish side Wisla Krakow last Saturday, with all 22 squad members getting 45 minutes apiece. Parkinson described the workout as a positive start to the fitness programme.
"It's making sure that we get the minutes in players," he explained. "When it is only a 45-minute game for the individuals, then we can train harder leading into it and then straight after when we get back, because there's not that need for the second day recovery."
Next up, Wrexham face Manchester United on Saturday at Helsinki's Olympic Stadium — a fixture Parkinson is relishing. "It's an interesting fixture going to play at the Olympic Stadium, which I think is great for us," he said.
The club then travels to the United States, where they take on Leeds United in Tampa on Sunday, 26 July, before meeting Liverpool in New York four days later. Their final pre-season outing is a clash with Sunderland on Sunday, 2 August.
Despite the high-profile opponents, Parkinson stressed that physical conditioning remains the overriding priority at this stage of preparation. "This early stage of pre-season, the first couple of weeks, the fitness element overrides anything really because we've got to get the lads prepared for a Championship season," he said.
Parkinson confirmed that most of his squad are in the shape required, with only a small number of players managing minor knock-on issues from last season. "The lads feel they're in a good place," he added.
