Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit believes the Gunners were spared a significant headache by their failure to land Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior, citing concerns over the Brazilian's temperament and its potential impact on the dressing room.

Speaking to Boyle Sports, Petit praised Vinícius' undeniable technical gifts while questioning whether a personality of his magnitude could thrive under Mikel Arteta's disciplined management style.

"I think Vinicius Jr is a really talented player but in terms of his mentality I am not sure he is a good fit for Arsenal. That's just my opinion."

Petit pointed to the culture Arteta has cultivated at Arsenal — one built on humility and collective effort — arguing that a disruptive presence could undermine those foundations.

"I see so many humble players at Arsenal so if you all of a sudden bring in someone who is completely different, it can be a problem, especially with Arteta's style of management."

The Mourinho flashpoint

The former France international drew on a specific incident to strengthen his argument — the confrontation between Vinícius and José Mourinho after the recent clash between Real Betis and Real Madrid, which Petit compared to an earlier dispute with Xabi Alonso over a refused handshake.

"Vinicius Jr receives so much stick from the fans, the press and social media but in those moments he is sending the wrong message. I think he is probably a bullet dodged for Arsenal looking at that moment."

While Petit stopped short of dismissing Vinícius as a player, he was clear that Arsenal would have struggled to manage the wider consequences of bringing him in.

"I would have loved to see a player with the talent of Vinicius Jnr play for Arsenal but with his mentality and his ego I think it would have made for a really difficult situation to cope with."

Vinícius has long been one of the most polarising figures in European football — celebrated for his brilliance on the ball yet frequently at the centre of controversy off it. For Petit, that combination makes him a risk Arsenal were wise to avoid.
