Philip Otele Closing in on Lecce Move After Hamburg Opts Out

Nigeria winger Philip Otele is on the verge of a transfer to Serie A club Lecce, with the Italian side and Swiss Super League champions FC Basel expected to enter direct negotiations this week to seal the deal.
Otele, 26, spent the 2024–25 season on loan at Bundesliga outfit Hamburger SV, making nine league appearances and scoring once. Hamburg ultimately decided against triggering the purchase option in his loan agreement, which had been set at a figure between €4.5 million and €5 million.
Basel's asking price
FC Basel are understood to be seeking around €3 million for the Nigerian international — a figure that mirrors the fee they paid UAE Pro League club Al Wahda to bring Otele to Switzerland in 2025.
The winger is contracted to the Swiss club until June 2028, but a move to the Italian top flight now appears the most likely outcome as talks between the two clubs gain momentum.
International record
Otele has earned five caps for the Super Eagles since breaking into the national team setup, and a successful switch to Serie A could strengthen his case for more regular international consideration.
