Premier League xG Breakdown: Who Is Really Performing and Who Is Flattered by the Table

51 minutes ago·3 min

Five games into the new Premier League season, the early standings tell only part of the story. A year ago, Liverpool sat top with five wins from five and Tottenham Hotspur were third — yet both clubs ended the campaign in far more modest positions, fifth and 17th respectively. The table, at this point, is more of a snapshot than a verdict.

Expected goals (xG) offers a sharper lens. The metric measures the number and quality of chances a team creates and concedes, stripping out finishing, goalkeeping heroics, and luck to reveal how sides are truly performing. Premier League history consistently shows that the teams who dominate games over time are the ones who collect the most points.

Penalties are best excluded from the analysis — refereeing calls and defensive lapses distort the picture of genuine attacking and defensive quality, particularly this early in the season.

Arsenal lead despite Brighton setback

Champions Arsenal suffered their heaviest defeat in three years when Brighton & Hove Albion dismantled them last weekend, yet they still lead the league in xG difference. Manchester City are not far behind in terms of game dominance, while Brentford's impressive unbeaten run is fully supported by their underlying numbers — there is nothing fortunate about it.

Manchester United have endured an underwhelming start by most measures, but only three clubs have produced a higher xG difference so far. Their performances have been more solid than the discourse around them suggests. Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth have similarly been better than their positions in the early table imply.

At the other end of the performance table, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, and Newcastle United have been the least convincing sides overall. Newcastle's standing is perhaps the most surprising — despite sitting in the top half, their underlying numbers are a concern. Villa, however, demonstrated last season that a slow start need not define a campaign; they recovered to finish fourth.

Among the promoted clubs, both Hull City and Ipswich Town have made genuinely solid starts, suggesting neither side will make up the numbers quietly.

Brighton's attack leads the league

Going forward, Brighton & Hove Albion have generated more high-quality chances than any other side, ahead of Manchester City, Brentford, and Manchester United. Even more impressively, they have converted those chances with ruthless efficiency — scoring 15 non-penalty goals from an xG of 10.7.

The only team to outdo Brighton in clinical finishing is Newcastle United — and the irony is that the Magpies have the lowest xG in the league. They have scored nine goals from an xG of just 4.5, effectively doubling what a typical team would produce from the same chances. Head coach Matthias Jaissle will want Newcastle to create more opportunities rather than relying on such exceptional finishing throughout the season.

At the other end of the efficiency scale, Coventry, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, and Tottenham Hotspur have each scored three fewer goals than their xG suggests they should have. Whether that reflects a genuine finishing problem or simply a run of bad luck will become clearer as the weeks progress.

Arsenal's defence remains a fortress

Defensively, Arsenal remain comfortably the best side in the division, even after the Brighton defeat. Oliver Glasner has work to do to improve Nottingham Forest's goalscoring, but he has already built a solid defensive base at the City Ground. Andoni Iraola has similarly laid firm foundations at Liverpool.

In London, Crystal Palace, Fulham, and Chelsea have all been far too open at the back. Chelsea, however, are not quite as fragile as their 12 goals conceded implies — Xabi Alonso's side have faced fewer genuinely dangerous chances than that tally suggests.

Brighton & Hove Albion's relentless attacking output has come at a cost defensively. Fabian Hurzeler's team have been somewhat fortunate not to have conceded more, while Everton and Leeds United have each kept out three more goals than their xG against would predict — both clubs ranking among the stronger defensive units so far.

Five games is a small sample, but the underlying numbers already offer a clearer picture of where each club truly stands heading into the weeks ahead.
