Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh has revealed he expects between three and five additional players to arrive at Ibrox before the summer transfer window shuts, conceding the club's results have fallen short of expectations.

The Glasgow club brought in nine new players over the course of the summer but have managed just one point from their opening two Scottish Premiership matches under new manager Derek McInnes. The situation is further complicated by a 2-1 deficit against Polish side Jagiellonia Bialystok from the first leg of their UEFA Europa League third qualifying round tie.

Business described as 'clunky'

Speaking at an open shareholders' forum in Glasgow, Cavenagh acknowledged that transfer activity so far has been far from smooth. "There's certainly work to be done," he said. "I don't like putting a number on it but certainly I'd hope three to five more players are coming in and a number will possibly go out."

Cavenagh also admitted the timing of key fixtures adds pressure. "It sucks that we have to play a number of important games before the window closes but that's how it works," he said.

Despite the difficult opening to the season, the chairman remained upbeat about the direction of the club. "When we came in around a year ago, our ambition was sustained winning and winning sustainably. I understand we're not there yet; I'm more optimistic now than I was a year ago," he said. He added that a culture of accepting second place — and sometimes worse — had taken root at the club and changing that would take time.

McInnes fits the 'Klopp style'

Cavenagh was joined at the forum by chief executive Jim Gillespie and shareholder Paraag Marathe. Gillespie defended the appointment of McInnes, who narrowly missed out on the Scottish Premiership title with Hearts last season.

"You can go for a Pep [Guardiola] style manager or a [Jurgen] Klopp style manager — we wanted a Klopp-style manager who plays on the front foot," Gillespie said. "Derek has been high on our list for a long time and we think he fits the style and culture of this club."

VAR controversy following Hibernian defeat

Gillespie also confirmed Rangers are seeking clarification from the Scottish FA over a VAR decision that resulted in a Hibernian penalty during Sunday's 2-1 defeat. "It was my understanding that it has to be a clear and obvious error for the referee to be called over," Gillespie said. "I didn't see that as either clear or obvious."

Gillespie called for a broader strategy around refereeing development. "We need a strategy for developing referees and VAR. My question for the SFA would be 'what is the strategy for improvement?' — we have to get improvement," he said.

Rangers host Jagiellonia Bialystok in the second leg on Thursday, with the winners facing either Northern Irish champions Larne or Georgia's Iberia Tbilisi in the UEFA Europa League play-offs.
