Rodri Arrives in Barcelona to Seal £65m Move from Manchester City

3 hours ago·2 min

Spain midfielder Rodri has touched down in Barcelona, declaring it his "dream" to pull on the famous blaugrana shirt, as the move from Manchester City edges closer to completion.

Barcelona have struck a deal worth approximately £65 million with City to secure the services of the 30-year-old, who is set to put pen to paper on a four-year contract with the La Liga champions.

"I'm very happy to have arrived. The last few days have been intense, but I'm glad everything has been sorted out. Of course, playing for FC Barcelona is a dream," Rodri told reporters at the airport on Monday.

"I can't wait to be with my team-mates, many of whom I already know from the national team. It's time to get to work and give my very best."

The midfielder also set out his ambitions at his new club, insisting he wants to lift the Champions League and every other piece of silverware available alongside his new team-mates.

Seven trophy-laden seasons at City

Rodri departs Manchester City after seven remarkable seasons, having made 298 appearances and claimed 12 major honours — among them four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three EFL Cups, and the Champions League in 2022-23. He originally arrived at the Etihad Stadium from Atletico Madrid in 2019 for a then club-record fee of £62.8 million.

His time in England was not without difficulty. A serious knee injury robbed him of much of the 2024-25 campaign, while a hamstring problem had disrupted portions of the previous season. Yet Rodri returned to his finest form at the World Cup this summer, steering Spain to a second world title and earning the player of the tournament award — a fitting reminder of his quality at the highest level.

The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner had been entering the final year of his City contract, with Real Madrid widely reported as the frontrunners for his signature. However, Barcelona pressed hard in recent days and ultimately won the race after City rejected an opening bid of £38.5 million last week before accepting a revised offer in the region of £65 million.
