Rogers Gutted as Chelsea Fall to Liverpool in Carabao Cup Penalty Drama

1 hour ago·1 min

Chelsea forward Morgan Rogers has described his side's penalty shootout exit against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup as "probably the worst way to lose a game," after a night that promised so much and delivered only heartbreak.

The tie produced 90 tense minutes of football with neither Chelsea nor Liverpool able to find a winner in regulation time, forcing the contest into a shootout. It was there that defender Wesley Fofana missed the decisive spot-kick, handing Liverpool the win and a place in the next round.

Liverpool will now face Bournemouth in the competition's following stage, a reward earned from the cruelest of margins.

Rogers reflects on a night that slipped away

Speaking to ITV Sport after the final whistle, Rogers made no attempt to hide his disappointment. He felt Chelsea had been competitive throughout and believed they should have made the most of the chances that came their way.

"It is probably the worst way to lose a game. It was an even game and at times we had the better of it. I had half chances that I'd have liked to have put away. It was one of them that can go either way and you have to accept it."

Rogers acknowledged the lottery nature of penalties — a format that flattens the nuances of 90 minutes into a single moment of individual nerve. For Chelsea, that single moment belonged to Fofana, and it did not go their way.

The result ends Chelsea's involvement in the Carabao Cup, leaving Rogers and his teammates to reflect on what might have been in a cup tie that was theirs to win for long stretches of the match.
