Said Martinez to Referee Belgium vs Senegal at the 2026 World Cup

Honduras's Said Martinez will take charge of Belgium's Round of 32 clash with Senegal at the 2026 World Cup, with the match scheduled to kick off at 9pm British time at the Seattle Stadium.

Both sides arrive at this stage having recovered from poor group-stage openings. Belgium secured their passage to the Round of 32 with a 5-1 victory over New Zealand, while Senegal sealed theirs with an emphatic 5-0 demolition of Iraq.

Martinez's record at the 2026 World Cup

Martinez is no stranger to the tournament, having already refereed two group-stage matches. He oversaw the 0-0 draw between England and Ghana in Group L, as well as the 1-1 stalemate between Qatar and Switzerland in Group B. He also served as the fourth official for Portugal's goalless draw against Colombia.

Across his two matches as the main referee, Martinez averages 2.5 bookings per game and has awarded one penalty. His wider record underlines a willingness to use his cards — across 19 matches in the CONCACAF Champions League Cup, he averages 4.1 bookings per game, and across three Olympic Games tournaments he has averaged almost six bookings per match.

His tournament has not been without controversy, however. Martinez drew criticism after declining to award Ghana what many observers described as a clear penalty during their Group L encounter with England.

The officiating team

Martinez will be joined in his assistant referee roles by fellow Hondurans Walter Lopez and Christian Ramirez. Colombia's Andres Rojas and Alexander Guzman will serve as the fourth official and reserve assistant referee respectively.
