Bukayo Saka's close-range finish just before the hour mark handed Arsenal a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park on Monday evening, giving the champions back-to-back wins as they begin their Premier League title defence.
The result will sting Unai Emery's side, who showed markedly more resilience than the 4-0 collapse at Brighton on the opening weekend and gave Arsenal a genuine contest throughout. Yet Saka's instinctive strike proved the difference in a hard-fought affair.
Villa make Arsenal work for it
Aston Villa were sharper and more organised than their Brighton humiliation suggested, with Emiliano Buendia striking the crossbar via a fierce effort in the 12th minute — the game's first clear moment of danger.
Mikel Arteta's Arsenal, unchanged from their win over Coventry, controlled possession and probed from set pieces, but Gabriel's mistimed header was their best opportunity of the opening 45 minutes. Half-time arrived with the scoreline level and the outcome genuinely uncertain.
Christos Tzolis was withdrawn at half-time, having been booked and in danger of receiving a red card. Arteta introduced Eberechi Eze in his place, and the change helped loosen the game. Arsenal increased their pressure, with Saka driving much of it.
Saka settles it
The Arsenal talisman believed he had earned a penalty early in the second half, but a VAR review confirmed that Ian Maatsen's foul had occurred outside the penalty area. The decision barely mattered — Saka forced home Riccardo Calafiori's low cross from close range in the 59th minute to put Arsenal ahead.
Aston Villa, who handed debuts to goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and forward Nicolas Jackson in their starting line-up, pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages. Arsenal's response was to call upon Bruno Guimaraes and Mikel Merino from the bench, before handing a late cameo to former Villa defender Ezri Konsa. The champions held firm.
Suzuki impresses on daunting debut
Replacing World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez in goal for a clash against the champions, in front of the Holte End, was always going to be a demanding baptism for Suzuki. The Japan goalkeeper acquitted himself well throughout.
He failed to claim one early cross but won the Villa crowd over by tipping a near-post header over the bar, prompting chants of 'the world's number one' — a fond nod to the popular refrain previously associated with Martinez. Suzuki's distribution stood out too, a precise pass out to George Hemmings on the left wing drawing particular admiration.
He did spill one fierce shot in the second half, but he denied Kai Havertz one-on-one — unaware that the offside flag had already been raised. Even amid defeat, Suzuki gave Villa fans genuine reason for optimism.
Arsenal's depth signals intent
