Saliba Reveals He Has Been Playing Through Back Pain at World Cup 2026

France and Arsenal defender William Saliba has admitted to playing through persistent back pain during the FIFA World Cup 2026, revealing that the problem has troubled him for several months.

Saliba managed the issue throughout Arsenal's gruelling UEFA Champions League and Premier League campaigns before travelling with France to the tournament. He confirmed at a press conference ahead of France's Group I clash against Iraq that medical staff are keeping a close eye on his condition.

"I've had some minor niggles for several months. I've been gritting my teeth because there was the Champions League and the Premier League. But the coaching staff are handling it very well," Saliba said.

The defender was candid about not being fully fit, while dismissing any suggestion that it should serve as an excuse. "I'm not at 100 per cent, but there are plenty of players who aren't at 100 per cent either — you can't make excuses," he added. He also underlined the rare nature of the occasion: "The World Cup comes round only once every four years, so you've got to grit your teeth."

Praise for Olise — with a word of caution

Saliba also spoke about his France teammate Michael Olise, lauding the winger's extraordinary talent while urging restraint before placing him alongside the legends of French football.

"He's a star, but he has a lot to accomplish before he can be compared to Zidane or Platini," Saliba said, striking a measured tone.

That caution aside, the Arsenal centre-back was generous in his admiration for Olise's all-round ability at this level.

"He can do everything on the pitch. I hope he becomes a player like that. He's world-class; he can dribble, he shoots, and when he needs to shoot, he shoots. When he dribbles, he dribbles — he's a joy to watch," Saliba added.
