World Cup Staff Member Swallowed by Giant Czech Republic Flag at Estadio Akron

2 hours ago·2 min

A FIFA flag-handling crew member became an unlikely highlight of the Czech Republic versus South Korea match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup — after being completely swallowed by a rolling Czech Republic flag in front of a packed crowd at Estadio Akron in Zapopan.

The match itself ended 1-1, but it was the chaotic scene during the pre-match national anthems that captured attention on social media. As the giant flag was folded and rolled up by a line of crew members sprinting across its surface, one unfortunate individual fell behind — and vanished inside the enormous folds of blue, red, and white before anyone could notice.

Fans inside the stadium erupted with laughter as the stricken crew member struggled visibly beneath the fabric, unable to free themselves as colleagues completed the roll.

How the flag ceremony works

At every match in this World Cup, both squads assemble around the centre circle while colossal flag replicas stretch across each half of the pitch behind them. Once the national anthems conclude, teams of workers grab one end of each flag and run the length of it, folding it in half, then half again, before rolling it up and carrying it away.

The process is straightforward — unless you stumble, fall, or are simply outpaced by your fellow crew members. In that scenario, there is little stopping you from disappearing inside the flag entirely, which is precisely what unfolded here.

A familiar hazard

This kind of flag-related mishap is not without precedent in North American sport. Fans of Major League Baseball's Cincinnati Reds have long been acquainted with what they affectionately call the Tarp Monster — the stadium's covering tarpaulin that periodically consumes ground staff during the baseball season in similarly dramatic fashion.

The crew member at Estadio Akron has since been confirmed safe. Whether they have fully recovered their dignity is, however, a separate matter entirely.
