Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has spoken out against manager Michael Carrick's choice to play Matheus Cunha as a centre-forward, insisting the setup has made his former club's attack frustrating to watch.

Appearing on The Good, The Bad, and The Football, Scholes pointed to the most recent performance against Everton as evidence of a broader problem at the club, calling it timid and lacking in aggression.

"I felt it was really timid against Everton. There was no aggression and Everton were there for the taking. There was so much space and they never went for the throat," Scholes said.

The Cunha conundrum

The former United midfielder made clear that, in his view, Cunha does not suit the centre-forward role — and that uncertainty over his best position is causing the attack to suffer.

"The centre-forward position is a bit of an issue because he is not playing Sesko. He is a focal point. It is very difficult to watch a Manchester United team without a centre-forward," Scholes said.

"With Cunha, we don't really know what he is — a No.10 or a wide player — but he's definitely not a No.9, and watching United without a No.9 is a struggle."

Scholes urged Carrick to hand the starting berth to Benjamin Sesko instead, believing the striker offers a clearer focal point for United's front line.

Assists but no goals

Cunha did contribute two assists in Manchester United's 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town, yet his inability to pose a consistent threat in front of goal has drawn concern from supporters and analysts alike. With United's attacking unit still searching for cohesion, the pressure on Carrick to find a settled striker solution continues to grow.
