Premier League icon Alan Shearer has delivered a blunt verdict on Tottenham Hotspur's summer recruitment drive, warning that spending £330 million on new players has heaped enormous pressure on a side now rooted to the bottom of the table.
Spurs embarked on one of the most ambitious squad rebuilds in their recent history ahead of this season, bringing in several high-profile names in a determined effort to close the gap on the Premier League's top clubs. But the results so far have failed to match the investment.
Shearer's stark assessment
Speaking to Betfair, the Newcastle United legend was candid about his concerns. "I'm not sure the fees warrant the ability, but no one would have expected them to be bottom of the league," he said.
Shearer singled out the scale of individual deals as evidence of a club that may have overreached. "They spent an absolute fortune on them — on everyone, I think. Van Hecke was a lot of money, Tonali was incredible money, Savio and Marmoush on loan are others as well," he added.
With the international break offering a temporary reprieve, Shearer made clear that the clock is ticking. "It is a long, long three weeks for Tottenham and they simply have to start winning football games when they are back," he said. "All the bigger questions will start to be asked, if not already, if they don't start winning very, very soon."
Survival confident but top-six hopes fade
Despite his criticism, Shearer stopped short of predicting relegation, drawing a parallel with Aston Villa's slow start to last season — a campaign in which Villa failed to win any of their opening five matches before recovering to qualify for European football.
"I still think they'll have enough to stay up. They'll use the Aston Villa situation and what happened to them at the start of last season," Shearer said. "There's still loads of football to be played, which there is, but there's a massive amount of work to be done at Spurs."
However, his pre-season optimism about Tottenham's ceiling has clearly dimmed. "I had them to finish in the top six this season and I am not sure that that will happen now," he admitted — a sobering reflection on just how far the club's ambitions have slipped from expectation to reality.
