Szoboszlai Commits to Liverpool Until 2031 with New Five-Year Deal

Dominik Szoboszlai has committed his future to Liverpool, signing a new five-year contract that ties the midfielder to Anfield until 2031.
The 25-year-old arrived at the club from RB Leipzig for £60 million in 2023 and swiftly established himself as one of the most important figures in the squad. Last season — widely considered his finest in red — he scored 13 goals and provided 12 assists, earning the club's player of the season award despite Liverpool enduring a difficult 2025-26 campaign.
Szoboszlai had two years remaining on his previous deal, and negotiations between his representatives and sporting director Richard Hughes stretched over several months. Talks gathered pace in recent weeks, with an agreement reached and formally signed this week.
A future leader at Anfield
Liverpool regard Szoboszlai as more than a key midfielder — they see him as a long-term leader. His new deal arrives at a critical moment for the club, which has lost Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid, while Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson have also departed this summer. The contracts of Alisson and Virgil van Dijk expire in 12 months, making Szoboszlai's long-term commitment a significant stabilising signal.
With Robertson now gone, Liverpool must appoint a new vice-captain. Szoboszlai — who already captains Hungary — is considered a strong candidate for the role.
Former head coach Arne Slot, who praised Szoboszlai's leadership qualities throughout the season, offered a measured assessment of his development. "Yes, but he is still young," Slot said when asked whether the Hungarian had the attributes to be a future leader. "There is still a step to make in terms of leadership, being vocal and a voice in the dressing room if I compare him to Virgil."
The esteem in which Szoboszlai is held across the squad was underlined in February, when Mohamed Salah described him as "one of the best players in the world."
New manager Andoni Iraola, beginning his first transfer window at Anfield, will likely view this contract as one of the most consequential pieces of business in the summer. Liverpool are expected to add further signings, but retaining Szoboszlai sends a clear message about the club's ambitions.
When Szoboszlai first signed under Jurgen Klopp in 2023, Klopp declared: "This is a signing for our present and also for our future." That future, it is now confirmed, extends well into the next decade. Szoboszlai returned to Merseyside on Tuesday for pre-season training and will join Liverpool's touring party for their trip to the United States next week.
