Tella Fires Leverkusen Into Next DFB-Pokal Round as Boniface Watches From Bench

Nigeria winger Nathan Tella marked his first goal of the season as Bayer Leverkusen demolished Wehen Wiesbaden 4-0 in the DFB-Pokal on Saturday, booking their place in the next round with authority.

Tella entered the match as a substitute in the 65th minute, replacing Fernandez, and needed just four minutes to make his mark — slotting home Leverkusen's third goal of the evening in the 69th minute.

Dominant display in Wiesbaden

The former Southampton forward had been looking to find his footing at Leverkusen following his return to the club, and the goal will provide a timely confidence boost as the season gets underway.

His compatriot Victor Boniface, who rejoined Leverkusen this season after a loan spell at Werder Bremen, remained an unused substitute for the full 90 minutes at the BRITA-Arena.

Leverkusen had taken control of the tie well before Tella's introduction. Patrik Schick broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute, and Lucas Vázquez doubled the advantage just two minutes into the second half to put the contest beyond Wehen Wiesbaden's reach.

The hosts offered little resistance throughout, managing only 29 percent of possession against Leverkusen's commanding 71 percent. Their backline was rarely troubled, and the outcome was never in doubt.

Christian Kofane added gloss to the scoreline in the 79th minute, tapping in to complete a thoroughly convincing 4-0 victory and secure Leverkusen's passage to the next round of the DFB-Pokal.
