Erik ten Hag has gone on record with a damning assessment of Cristiano Ronaldo, telling ESPN that the Portuguese forward lacked both the physical condition and the dedication required during their time together at Manchester United.

The former Manchester United manager did not hold back, suggesting that Ronaldo's best days had already passed by the time he arrived at Old Trafford for his second spell. Ten Hag indicated that, in his view, the decline had begun well before their reunion — pointing to Ronaldo's time at Juventus as the turning point.

"From Juventus onwards, it's simply over," Ten Hag told ESPN, in a blunt verdict on one of football's most celebrated careers.

The comments are among the most direct criticisms a high-profile manager has ever levelled at Ronaldo, whose relentless work ethic and physical conditioning have long been central to his public image. The Portuguese star built a global reputation on the back of extraordinary dedication to his fitness, making Ten Hag's remarks all the more striking.

Ronaldo's second stint at Manchester United ended acrimoniously in November 2022, following a controversial interview in which he criticised the club and Ten Hag directly. His contract was terminated by mutual agreement shortly after, and he subsequently joined Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

Ten Hag himself departed Manchester United in October 2024 after the club endured a difficult period of results in the Premier League. His tenure at Old Trafford ended with the FA Cup trophy in 2024 — a high point in an otherwise turbulent spell in charge.

The latest remarks are unlikely to cool the tensions between the two figures, and will almost certainly reignite debate about what went wrong during Ronaldo's ill-fated final season at the club.
