The World Cup Knockout Goal That Has Always Eluded Cristiano Ronaldo

2 hours ago·2 min

Stephen Eustáquio's 92nd-minute winner for Canada against South Africa at SoFi Stadium has thrown a remarkable statistical footnote into sharp relief — one that cuts right to the heart of Cristiano Ronaldo's otherwise extraordinary World Cup record.

Eustáquio, who was born in Ontario to Portuguese parents and represented Portugal at Under-21 level before committing to Canada in 2019, wore the No. 7 shirt when he converted his dramatic late goal. The Athletic's Colin Millar identified the resulting quirk: Eustáquio became the first player with any international affiliation to Portugal to score a World Cup knockout goal while wearing the number 7.

Ronaldo's missing chapter

The implication is striking. Cristiano Ronaldo — the all-time leading scorer in men's international football — has played in multiple World Cups for Portugal and is yet to register a single goal in the knockout rounds. Every one of his ten World Cup goals has come during the group stage.

Ronaldo's World Cup goal record reads as follows: one goal at the 2006 tournament in Germany, one at the 2010 edition in South Africa, one in Brazil in 2014, four in Russia in 2018 — including a hat-trick against Spain — one in Qatar in 2022, and two against Uzbekistan during the current group stage in 2026. That brace against Uzbekistan made him the first man to score at six separate World Cup tournaments.

Despite that historic milestone, the knockout stage has remained a blank page throughout his entire career. Portugal have been eliminated from the tournament in previous editions without Ronaldo finding the net after the group phase concluded.

Croatia up next — and time running out

Portugal now face Croatia in their Round of 32 match in Toronto. Should Croatia end Portugal's tournament without Ronaldo getting on the scoresheet, it is difficult to see when — or whether — that knockout goal ever arrives. At 40 years of age, Ronaldo is almost certainly playing in his final World Cup.

For context, Ronaldo currently sits on ten World Cup goals in total, nine behind all-time record scorer Lionel Messi.
