Tielemans Fires Belgium Into Last 16 With Extra-Time Penalty Against Senegal

Belgium survived a remarkable scare to edge past Senegal 3-2 after extra time in the FIFA World Cup 2026 last 32, with Youri Tielemans scoring a controversial penalty in the 117th minute to complete an extraordinary comeback at Lumen Field.
Senegal's dream start
The Teranga Lions looked on course for a famous victory after Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr put them two goals to the good. As late as the 86th minute, Senegal led 2-0 and appeared destined for the last 16.
Diarra, who plays his club football at Sunderland, opened the scoring, before Crystal Palace winger Sarr doubled the advantage to give Senegal firm control of the tie.
Belgium's stunning fightback
Belgium manager's decision to introduce Romelu Lukaku from the bench proved decisive. The veteran striker pulled one back, and within three minutes Tielemans had levelled — a breathtaking turnaround that sent the match into extra time.
With penalties looming, Lamine Camara brought down Tielemans in the 117th minute. After a lengthy pitchside VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot — a decision that sparked immediate controversy.
Sky Sports pundits Roy Keane and Gary Neville, speaking on ITV, both disagreed with the call.
Tielemans showed composure to slam home from 12 yards and seal Belgium's passage into the last 16. The attendance at Lumen Field was 66,925.
What comes next
Belgium will face either co-hosts USA or Bosnia-Herzegovina in Seattle in the last 16, with the match scheduled for Tuesday, July 7 at 1am UK time.
