Tonali Set to Leave Newcastle for Tottenham in £90m Deal

2 hours ago·2 min

Sandro Tonali appears set to leave Newcastle United this summer, with Tottenham Hotspur emerging as his most likely destination in a move that could surpass £90 million, according to Italian transfer journalist Nico Schira.

Tottenham submitted an initial bid for the Italy international, which Newcastle turned down. Spurs are now expected to return with a revised offer understood to be above €100 million (£86 million). Tonali has reportedly already agreed personal terms with the north London club, signing a contract through 2032 worth £10.3 million per year.

New Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi — a fellow Italian — is said to have been instrumental in driving the pursuit of Tonali, and appears to have the full backing of the Tottenham hierarchy.

Tonali's journey at Newcastle

Tonali arrived at St. James' Park in the summer of 2023 for a reported £55 million. His debut campaign was disrupted early on when a betting scandal resulted in a suspension that kept him out of action for around 10 months. Newcastle stood firmly by their signing throughout the ordeal.

Once reintegrated, Tonali wasted little time proving his worth. Over two seasons, he accumulated 98 appearances across all competitions, establishing himself as one of the key figures in Eddie Howe's midfield.

His performances attracted attention from several top clubs, with Manchester City, Arsenal, and Manchester United all linked alongside Spurs before Tottenham seemingly moved to the front of the queue.

A busy summer at Newcastle

Should the transfer be completed, it would represent Newcastle's second major sale of the summer, following Anthony Gordon's £70 million departure to Barcelona ahead of England's World Cup campaign.

Tottenham are building ambitiously this window. West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes is also reportedly close to a separate £85 million move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, following West Ham's relegation from the top flight. Spurs are determined to avoid the relegation battles that have defined their previous two seasons.
